Press W or D to move around and use the J key to jump. Jump is on a separate key from movement, which means you can hold a direction through a leap instead of committing to it before you take off.
Learn each strange level rather than reacting to it. The layouts are built to catch a first attempt, so treat an early death as information about where the trap is and take the same route again with the jump timed differently.
